Nitish Kumar : New policy for appointment of

Urdu teachers in all schools

PATNA: If China can progress with its language Hanyu, France with French and Germany with German, why can't India with Hindi and other Hindustani languages, asked chief minister Nitish Kumar while hitting out at the protagonists of English who say nothing can move ahead without English.

Inaugurating the first-ever two-day meet 'Jashn-e-Urdu' here on Saturday, Nitish said India can progress with the use of Hindi and other Hindustani languages. "If nothing can move without English, as they say, why do they go asking for votes in Hindi and other languages, and never in English. I am not against any language but no language should be made a compulsion," he said. The CM was also critical of the UPSC for giving preference to English, and said in a democratic set-up work should be done in people's language.

The 'Jashn-e-Urdu' will provide a platform to the Urdu litterateurs and others to find ways and give suggestions to the government for promotion of the language. "The conference should come out with some concrete suggestions and the government will be happy to consider them," he told the organizers and invitees.

The government, the CM said, has made a new policy for appointment of Urdu teachers in all the schools, irrespective of whether Urdu students existed there or not. Earlier, an Urdu teacher was considered for appointment in a school where at least 10 students desired to study Urdu. But, he added, the government is facing problems in getting Urdu teachers. "Some solution should be found out to overcome this problem (of dearth of teachers)," he said amid applause. The CM also praised Urdu Academy for its 15-day course to teach Urdu and said it will expand the reach of the language.

Hindi and Urdu, the CM said, are like sisters and there is absolutely no clash between them. In countryside, people belonging to different religions and cultures speak the same language, which is a combination of Hindi and Urdu words. "Urdu is a language of civilization and love," said CM's cultural adviser Pavan Kumar Verma, who played a key role in holding this event.

Jashn-e-Urdu consultant director Rakhshanda Jalil said the focus of the event will be on Bihar and its writers and the programme will include panel discussions on some topics. Eminent Urdu poet and chairman of Bihar Urdu Advisory Board Kalim Ajiz stressed on reinventing the spirit of Urdu for spreading the message of peace and harmony.

Secretary, cabinet coordination, the department organizing the event, Brajesh Mehrotra proposed a vote of thanks.
