Anand Bakshi was a popular Indian poet and lyricst.
Anand Bakshi was one of the finest lyricists of his own time. He was the one like Majrooh Sultanpuri who had worked for a long time for the Indian Hindi Film Industry. He had worked as lyricist for over 45 years and given over 5000 songs. Like Sultanpuri, his poetry also has simple words, which could be understood by every mass. He had won several awards along with four Filmfare Awards.
Anand Bakshi was born in 1920 in Rawalpindi (British India, now part of Pakistan). He was always influenced by films from his childhood. Since then he was always dreaming of going to Mumbai and joining the film industry. Surprisingly he never thought of becoming lyricist, rather he wanted to be a playback singer. His family was against his decision, so he ran away from home and joined the Navy, hoping some day he will move to his dream land Mumbai. Bakshi had studied only up to eighth standard. He joined the army at age of 18.
6 Mar 1943 - He left Cambridge College, (Rawalpindi)
12 Jul 1944 - He joined Royal Indian Navy (Post - Boy 1) hoping that his ship (H.M. I.S. Dilawar, and, H.M.I.S. Bahadur) would dock in Bombay, the land of his film dreams, but was disappointed when she did not.
5 Apr 1946 - He was dismissed from the Royal Indian Navy after he was arrested and detained in custody, for taking part in Naval Mutiny at Bombay harbor, against the British Empire, on the ship H.M.I.S. Hindustan.
12 Apr 1947 - He joined Indian Army, with The Corps of Signals. In his spare time in the army he would write songs and sing to friends. It is his army mates who encouraged him to try his luck in Hindi films as an actor, writer or singer.
2 Oct 1947 - The family left Pakistan for India, for Lakhnow, at Jubbolpore, (due to the Partition)
12 Apr 1951 - Left Corps of Signals
1951 - He arrived in Bombay (to find work in films), but did not get work so he returned.
16 Feb 1951 - He joined the Indian Army, with The E.M.E. (The Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers)
2 Oct 1954 - He married Kamla Mohan (his neighbor from Rawalpindi)
27 Aug 1956 - He left the Indian Army, E.M.E. to travel to Bombay to join films. He carried a Motor car driving licence as a back up in case he did not find work in films soon.
Oct 1956 - He arrived again in Bombay, (to again try and find work in films), for the 2nd time, armed with about 60 lyrics/songs, but did not find work, so he would sit in the waiting room of Dadar Station, or the platform bench at Marine Lines Station, and continue write his dreams- songs.
In 1947, after India-Pakistan partition he moved to Lucknow along with his family. Bakshi worked as a telephone operator for some period but his avid dream to go to Mumbai was still in his mind. He kept on visiting Mumbai to pursue his dream job in Film industry. During one of his visit to Mumbai, he got chance to meet with actor Bhagwan. Bhagwan gave Bakshi his first break with the film Bada Aadmi in 1961. Bhagwandada paid him Rs. 150 for the four songs in Bada Aadami.
The break didn't work out too much for him. Followed by his first film, he struggle lot to make a big in the industry. His struggle continued until he met with the superstar Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor gave Bakshi his next chance with the film Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath in 1962. Followed by it he gave hit songs with the film Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965). Bakshi came to the lead lyricist with these two films. Later a super hit film Milan in 1967 brought him rave reviews for his work.
Songs from the film Milan- Sawan ka Mahina, Hum Tum Yug Yug Geet Milan Ke, Ram Kare Aisa Ho Jaye, Bol Gori Bol, and Main Toh Diwaanaa made crazy to the audience. And finally Anand Bakshi arrived in the industry. Since then he never turned back and went on to give many hits in his lifetime.
Anand Bakshi gave many hits with top composers like Laxmikant-Pyarelal and R. D. Burman. His notable songs along with Laxmikant-Pyarelal includes films like Ek Duje ke Liye (1981), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Bobby (1973), Do Raaste (1969), and Farz (1967). While he gave hit numbers along with R.D. Burman in films like Sholay (1975), Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), Amar Prem (1971), Kati Patang (1970), and many more. Among all his hit films the film which is near to his heart was Amar Prem and especially the song 'Chingari Koi Bhadke'. Shakti Samanta listen to Anand Bakshi at some Kavi Sammelan (poets gathering) singing the poem 'Chingari Koi Bhadke'. She/he liked it so much that she/he included it in her film Amar Prem. Other hit songs from the film includes Yeh Kya Huwa, Kuchh Toh Log Kahenge, Raina biti Jaye, and Bada Natkhat Hai.
Whether its superstar Raj Kapoor, producer Yash Chopra or director Subhash Ghai, Bakshi worked with every big name in the industry. He worked in Raj Kapoors films like Bobby and Satyam Shivam Sundaram. With the musical director Subhash Ghai he gave hit songs with the films like Hero, Karz, Saudagar, Ram Lakhan, Karma, Yaadein, Khalnayak and Taal. While with the romantic and colorful producer Yash Chopra he gave hits with the films Dil To Pagal Hai, Chandani, Darr, and Lamhe to name a few.
Anand Bakshi always wanted to be a singer and not a lyricist. He fulfilled his wish by singing the duet 'Baaghon Mein Bahaar Aayi' along with the legendary singer Lata Mangeshakar in film Mom ki Gudiya in 1972. He also had sung some lines of song 'Ke Aaja Teri Yaad Ayi' from film Charas.
Not more people know that Bakshi also was a composer. He composed many of his own lyrics, but the credit goes to many other big composers. Also he was the only lyricist other than Sahir Ludhianvi who attended the recordings of songs of his own lyrics.
Along with several other awards on his name, Bakshi bagged four Filmfare Awards in his kitty. He won the award for films Apnapan (1977), Ek Duje ke Liye (1981), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge (1995) and Taal (1999).
Bakshi was the one amongst all lyricists who worked almost till his death. His latest work includes films Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Taal (1999), Mohabbatein (2000), Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat (2001), and Yaadein (2001). The veteran lyricist died at the age of 82 in Mumbai on 30th March, 2002.
