A doctorate from the Aligarh Muslim University, Kareem wrote several books on Kerala history in English and Malayalam. He began his teaching career from Farook College at Feroke near Calicut and was appointed principal of the Iqbal College at Peringanmala. For some time he was editor of the Kerala Gazeteer. In 1987 he joined the Kerala University at Trivandrum as the Head of the Department of Islamic Studies. He was secretary of the Kerala History Association and was general secretary of the Samastha Kerala Sahitya Parishath between 1987 and 1991. He was a member of syllabus committee and examination boards of various universities in the state.
He leaves behind his widow, two sons and two daughters.
