Wilful Thinking
Lighten the kohl of your dark eyes, wide enough,
Avert your gaze, in them lies dignity.
If they light upon an ascetic, confounded,
By her eye attracts you with great allure.
Two beaches, eyelashes, the centre lost,
From her pains my heart melted in agony.
Plucks out the hearts of men, snatching,
And whoever blames, their blame I ignore.
And if from them fall unwitting tears,
You feel intimacy behind closed doors.
But if laughing, lift for you the veil of fortune,
As if joy spreads over you clouds.
Oh an eye in which all beauty gathered,
For you my yearning and love, its youth.
An eye without kohl commands and is obeyed,
Whilst an eye implores yet receives no reply.
And an eye that gathered and revealed,
Its tenderness, satisfaction and welcome.
My thoughts to your love ever inclined,
Like nectar longing to be scented.
A vision enticed and captivated instantly the body,
By wilful thinking and worries summoned.
Between feelings of refusal, submission and struggle,
Tamed my feelings and my heart accepted.
My verse, my sight and my hearing for you,
And I offer, then I offer, all that cannot be given.
